Need help with graphics card in xsi

#1

Hi, im using mod tool, going through a tut from digital tutors. I opened up a scene file off the disk and i was playing around with the TDO (S Key) and first thing i noticed is LAG…oh my god…the lag…its killing me…seriously…im going to die cause its to slow. Its not the cpu, the cpu isn’t peaking, neither is the ram, which leaves me with my VC…its a evga GF 8800gs…i figured it would be good enough to get buy in xsi…obviously not. Can someone recommend a non quadro card to use…reason i say non quadro is i dont feel like selling a kidney, a lung, my liver, and maybe even a couple toes and some skin off my back to be able to afford a quadro card…not to mention i think i cant use them for gaming as i do a bit of gaming as well…So can someone point me to a good card that will handle xsi with alot of objects and polys? and be usable?

Also is there some thing i can look for when buying a video card that will indicate its ability to handle xsi or 3d apps in general?

I can’t see why the 8800 would be slow. I’ve used worse cards on scenes that are likely more complex than that of a new user.

Try different drivers.

Make sure Card level features like AA and Anistropic filtering are off (globally or for XSI).

How do i turn these off in Vista? Im also using the Mod Tool, not the full version.

The object iw as talking about was the Snow Mobile from the disk off of the xsi intro disks. It has 146 objects.

Mod tool = XSI with some unrelated stuff disabled. Shouldn’t make a difference.

Won’t comment on vista, beyond use XP.

so how would you do it under xp then?

Control Panel>Display Options> Advanced… it will be in the driver settings.

wwoooowwww…the speed increase just from turning those things off…omg…ccoooll…thanks…now i can get to doing some modeling with out lag.

You never mentioned your CPU speed.

It means a lot more than most people think it does when it comes to 3D apps. Video cards are great for games, but have never given me the video boost that a faster CPU can.
