Need Help With A Contest Demo Reel

#1

Hey guys,
I’m in the process of making an animated reel of a car that I have modelled. I’m not sure what I would like to do and I was wondering if anyone had any ideas to make it interesting, and stand-out from other animations like EA, or Rockstar, have produced with their extensive line of Racing, and Automotive video games.

P.S. I’m trying to keep it within the 3 min. range as that is a good limit that the pros like to see when they are assessing demo reel work.

Thanks everybody!

…what kind of job will you be looking to get with your reel?? if it is a modelling job then concentrate on the modelling, if it is an character animation reel then you need to infuse your car with character, maybe you are an effects animator in which case you need lots of particle effects etc etc.

The point is you need to demonstrate proficiency in a specific discipline and not worry too much about the others unless ofcourse you are applying for a general cg job in which case you might want to include all of the above. dont worry too much about originality just concentrate on quality …thats just my opinion.

Well heres the model…I want to obviously show off the model and my strengths in modelling and producing a good final result with just one model in some sort of environment

In under 3 min. (just a reminder)

If you are focusing on modeling… I wouldn’t worry about creating an animated piece of the car driving around an environment.

??? if you make a three minute reel showing off one car model… you will bore everyone to DEATH

I think you really need to show a variety of things… I mean your car looks good and all but there are at least 1,000 other people around here who can do the same thing. If I were you I would work on more models. (something other than a sportscar) Show that you’re not a one trick pony.

If you’re determined to make a reel with the one model however… I would keep it under 30 seconds… Do a turn around… crossfade between the wireframe view, shaded view and textured view and then maybe comp into a bg and try to make it as seemless and realistic as possible.

If you’re wanting to show off other talents then do something like this…

good luck…

I would do something humorous in the demo reel myself. Maybe also model an old pick-up truck from the 60s current day and have the car and truck drag race and have the truck win of course.

If you’re gonna character model, the more the merrier.

If you want a modeler job. Focus your reel on the shaded version of the car, and maybe show the texturing a few seconds before the ending.

But as someone pointed out, you need to show your skills in other fields, not just car modelling, EVEN IF YOU APPLY FOR CAR MODELER JOB. One idea could be modelling the garage where it is, but forget about dynamic stuff. You can even put a guy sat on a chair (static) and move the camera in a cool way, showing all the details everywhere.

I think getting a job out of nothing (no much experience I guess) is very difficult, and a car model is not enough in most cases.

I hope you have good luck man, skills are there, you just have to show 'em off with a more complex thing.
