Need help w/ Realistic Painting

#1

Hi everyone!

I would love it if you could tell me a techinique I could use to practice my coloring and painting skills in photoshop/ corel painter/ OpenCanvas. I seem to have problems with blending, and color choosing. My biggest problem is that I can't seem to get my brush settings right. I mean, if someone handed me a brush and paint in real life I can actually blend colors; how can I get a similar result on the computer?

<3<3 Thanks beforehand

P.S. I do have a tablet~ ^^

I’m new to digital painting too and have that exact same problem. What works for me in Photoshop [I’ve only touched that watered down Painter thing that comes with Wacom pads]. Paint everything monochromatic first, then use layer blending to add the pigment.
I start off with PS’s swatches (I just loaded all of them, appending them until I had this absurdly long list]. From there, I experiment until it looks right. I suppose if worse comes to worse, load up a photo and use the eye dropper to steal it’s colors and apply them directly to your piece.

The best idea is to experiment. And by experimenting I mean experimenting with everything. Use all three programs simutaneously if you can/want. Play with filters, with brushes, with swatches, with layers… Everything until you find something that works.

Hope that helps a bit.

Hello Sabira,

Unfortunately I can’t help you with choosing colors, for I’m struggling on it myself. But I remembered a very good thread about color blending by Linda Bergkvist. Linda showed several methods to blend colors, I’m sure you’ll find it helpful.
