need help: Side view concept picture need to translate into front view

#1

Hello cgtalkers! I have a concept picture of dagoy our “Dinagyang festival’s mascot”. What I wanted to do is to put him into 3d but the problem is, My concept picture is pointing on the side view. Can you guys help me or at least give me an idea on how to draw him in a front view so that it would be easy for me to put him into 3d? Thank you very much in advance.

Here is the picture of dagoy:

Try drawing it outline, then shade it and start thinking of the dimensions in this profile shot. No matter how you render it (you can get pretty darn close to that look) it still has to have some kind of dimension to work well in 3D. Think of all of the Bugs Bunny turnarounds that you’ve probably seen with the lines that go across to keep the sizes and spacing correct.

I would definately do some turn around sketches… put a piece of paper over this image and try and draw out the face from the front with the same eye, nose, forehead height. You could also just start roughing in a side view mesh and use a mirroring of some sort as you pull the vertices away from center. This process doesn’t work well for me because I can’t model without a guide, if it’s a drawing or a diagram I have to have a plan, but I’ve seen some guys who do well this way.

If you’ve got some really strong 3D skill those eyes could do some really strange things… in a good way!

I’d strongly suggest 2d animation here, tweening shapes in flash probably would do it. But as to 3d, there ins’t even a hint of mathematically accurate perspective whatsoever, so why 3d? No pun, just that I don’t see the point to it.

Hi sir! The bugs bunny turnarounds that you spoke awhile ago seems to be working sir as a matter of fact I’m working on it now. After I finish the head, I will post it to WIP section for some crits. Thank you very much for the tip sir.

I’d like to work on something new. I’m new to 3d modeling and animation I believe it’s a good start if I do some 3d animation project for the celebration of our festival. For so many years our mascot lives in 2d. I think it’s about time to recreate him. Plus, I’m considering this project as part of my training as a 3d artist.

well in that case, you could try and use only the characteristic proportional features and try and put that on a generic cartoony face, or a local artwork, it seems pretty culturally inclined.
But try getting an animator o make such poses for you, you’ll need someone who’s willing to build a weird rig. But good luck. Maybe you can post some updates here, opr concepts. We ould pitch in, you’ll learn.

Yeah that’s what I really planned to do. I’ll be posting it on the wip section as soon as I finish the Head. I would really like to hear the experts thoughts and opinions. Thank you very much for the tip sir.
