NEED HELP in ocean and ships in an animation movie

#1

hi all,

I’m an animator/3d supervisor in an egyptian animation studio,

We are working on the first egyptian/arabic animated 2d feature length movie since about…mmm…-no laughing- 12 yrs.

Any way, now i’m responsible for the 3d big scenes in the movie-rendered in 2d at the end-…i’m having some problems here.

as you can see in the video file in the link below - this is still in progress : not the final pallete, animation, simulation,no characters placed yet,no compositing done yet -, but yet the most annoying thing - i guess - is the wakes and foam generated from the ship.

the work flow for the ocean shortly is:

1- basic waves in real flow
2- exported to 3d studio max and added a few modifiers:
= FFD to adapt the camera focal length - to avoid simulating very big waves in RealFlow-
= noise modifer to add secondary waves to the ocean
= UVW to create this foam texture - or what was meant to be a foam texture created from combustion -
= Displace modifier with the same parameters of the uvw modifier to create this pumb in the wave.
3- Rendered using final toon

This is briefly what was done to create this water.

I need help on how to create a good looking wakes and foam using the same method of rendering, and if there is any foam texture source that any one knows, please refer to it.

I appreciate your time reading this…

well id start with getting the wake from the ship working then once that looks good move on to layer the mid waves. once is all is good too go next would be wave spray an mist.Im just thinking out loud as to break this down into smaller chunks. there also a plugin ported from houdini which look great you could look in to that i think its call HOT Houdini ocean tools hope that helps

Hi anas,
You can import the ship into realflow and generate the good interactive waves and foam textures for the same.

You can generate secondary splashes also.

I hope this helps.

that too i was jus explaining if he didnt have access to RF

thank you guys for replying and paying attention but,

1:The whole pipe line is depending on 3ds max and maya and their plugins and my final render is coming out from 3ds max as i mentioned before , so trying a whole new tool in houdini - which i might do if there was no other way- would be very time/brain consuming .

2:I’m already using RealFlow to generate the main waves , but when i’m genereating wakes from it may look not bad, but the foam texture is not matching the wake and is simply a mask sequence - grey scale bitmaps - to be used in placing the foam texture, and When I’m using a still image of foam texture in the mask it looks reaaaaaaaally weird.

3:If you noticed in the clip the style is rendered in 2d with ink lines - in the ocean - and compositing won’t help except may be in particles and splashes.

Did any one saw “sinbad the legend of seven seas”? at time 1"minute":40"secs" i guess “two ships entering the frame from the back”…look at the first ship, I need an approach to get that result.

I think my self that this sho particularly was made by a sequenced foam texture used as a bump map and color, but the problem is i cannot find this type of footage any where - free or paid for-…i’m thinking loud too.

Let me know what you guys think!!!..I’m desperately in bad need to complete that scene before i suicide!!!..- kidding but its really close -

thanks again, and still waiting.

i saw clip an the boat looks disconnect from the sea jus looks like its moving along an the wave look like a caned fx that is jus looping. jus looks off

hey,

I think you are right in that comment “disconnected from the sea”, but me myself i like that foam texture created in that shot, and i told you what i’ve tried and what exactly what i want the shot to look like, if there is another way to get that result i would be glad to hear it.

And if you know where to get such foam textures like this let me know…

thanks for replying

Hi ana,

You can check out the below link…

http://schnellhammer.net/blog/?p=152

Its done with Houdini ocean tool kit and mental ray shader in maya.

Houdini ocean tool kit for maya is available for free.

Thaaaaaaanx man alot,

this result is quite good …
i’m wondering if this texture could be exported as a sequenced footage…i hope so

thanks again man,
i’ll try this and i’ll show the result asap

very nice man ive been meaning to try it out

Hey everyone,

thanx for paying attention…

I’m still in the middle of this problem…
I’ve contacted “christian schnell” the creator of this awesome ocean wakes and foam generator for maya, he is a great guy , collaborative and everything, but…

this plugin he’d created was for maya 8.5 and was copyrighted to a company for a movie and is no longer available, He also said that he don’t think that he can find the time now to redevelop it to be compatable with new versions of Maya…

so…
False Alarm, Really interesting and inspiring but unfortunately out of reach…

I’m still waiting for your opinions …

please…sea the clip and tell me what to do…
