Need help breaking a windshield in cgi

Hi,

I hope this is the right category to post this in, didn’t find anything else (admins, be free to swap if necessary)

I’m working on a small promo that involves some post-production.
We want these huge 3D numbers crashing into a car windshield. I already have the footage, did the tracking and got a basic set-up for the numbers. But now I need the windshield to break. And in the way it looks like this:

Or at least something like this, but it can not just fall apart, as you would do with particles and so on.

This is a frame of the footage that I’m using:

And this is a still from the 3D set-up:

As you can see I’m haven’t modeled anything related to the car as I’m thinking of doing this 2D since it’s more some kind of texture that needs to be applied and not glass breaking into particles.

I have some footage from Videocopilot (bullets getting shot in a windshield) and I thought of composing them in a way it looks believable. I’m willing to do it in 3D as well but I just can’t see how I can get that broken windshield effect. If anyone has any hints or tips, I’ll take any advice. This is kind of low budget though, and it doesn’t need to look super professional (there’s a fade to black pretty fast after the crash), we just kinda want this done fast but that it still looks cool.

Using: 3D Max, After Effects (and PFtrack for matchmoving)
tl;dr: I need to break a windshield in CGI and could use some advice on doing this fast and effecient
