Need Hardware tips before building

Hey all, well I’ve finally got the money to purchase my animation pc. my budget was $2000 but after finding I could get 2 more cores for $200 more i brought it up to $2200 with slight fluidity.

Basically I need to know if my current setup I made will work, right now it’s unable to verify case size working and says I need an addition PCI slot which I don’t know what that is. Here is my current parts list if you see any glaring problems or have any tips I’d appreicate it!

The Windows OS doesn’t matter much since I can get one for a discounted price at my school, and extras such as monitors and accessories will be bought after.

Whats the network card for? the motherboard has onboard lan.

Ditto on the Ethernet card and sound card, they are not needed since the motherboard already has them. I would get a more reputable heatsink as sleeve bearing fans don’t last long. You know when a computer is making a rattling or buzzing noise and you thump it and the noise goes away? That’s usually a worn out sleeve bearing fan.

I left the soundcard, I assumed he wanted it for some specific reason. eg. I have a Xonar Essence STX for audio editing and my music; the onboard audio was a bit noisy when nothing was playing.

That Asus comes with an excellent network card already (Intel), so unless you need two networks (say wired home network and a NAS) the second card is pointless. But there are cases where one would want two (I have two and use them).

I wouldn’t buy a pci-e wifi card to be honest, the potential for poor signal is pretty high and can limit your case positioning. External, good quality USB ones are so cheap, and the wi-fi limits so low, that they tend to be better choices in my experience.

The power supply, for the specs, seems like a rebranded and price bumped offer. I haven’t looked for reviews, but make sure you’re not paying some odd rebrand with noisy coils and multiple anaemic rails (not implying it is, just saying make sure it isn’t a dud).

Rest seems fine, provided you actually need all the parts for a specific purpose (like the added network and audio cards).

Please, stay away from X revision of Intel CPU, they are 200% overpriced, and 5% faster.

There is 4GB version of GTX760, it will remain the same as 770 but with twice ram more.

That depends on application. In GPU rendering the 770 is considerably faster than the 760 for the price difference, somewhere in the realm of 1.5 or more (and at least around here that’s also the price ratio when they have the same amount of memory on board).

The additional RAM has two effects in practical use within 3D: more GPU cache meshes or textures or the such, or higher ceiling for GPU rendering. If you don’t cache things to the GPU, you don’t use Mari/Mudbox, and you don’t render on the GPU there is little point to more VRAM.
If you use Mari or GPU caching a lot, but don’t do GPU rendering, a 760 with 4GB is better bang for buck for sure, if you do all three, splashing out for a 770 with more RAM than 2GB will usually be worth it.
