Need guidance for 3D animation

#1

Hello everyone,

I am interested in 3D animation and want to pursue a career in it. In addition, I have a series of questions that I want to ask. First, what are the requirements to be a 3D animator? Second, I want to know what software I need to be familiar with? I only know about Maya. Third, what careers are apart of 3D animation? I think 3D modeling is cool. Last, what books teach novices how to 3D animate? Any book that shows the fundamentals of 3D animation is cool with me. It also has to have maya in it since I like the program.

Hey, if your interested in all aspects of CG, I would stay a generalist for a bit, learning all different skills and choosing which you prefer and attempt to specialise in.

But to improve your animation there are two books I would really recommend:

The animators survival kit

How to cheat in maya - tools and techniques for maya animators

Go through the animators survival kit, learning and practising everything. I would recommend doing most on paper/2d program like flash or something to start with. Then when you wanna try take those skills you have learnt into Maya, checkout the How to cheat in maya book, for general workflow practices.

To get a job in animation is difficult because there is so many talented animators out there. But its generally the same for all CG. If money isn’t really an option and you decide you definately want to do animation. I would recommend Animation Mentor, an online school where you are taught by professionals that work at Pixar, dreamworks, bluesky and other prestigeous film companys.

Good luck!
