Neck Setup

#1

Hi,

I have a quick question about a neck setup. I’ve been doing one extremely similar to jason schleifers AFR, but when I translate the head from side to side the whole head rotates from side to side also…

The ik spline goes on an arcing angle as opposed to a squiggly line that would cause the head to stay oriented upward.

Here’s a picture to demonstrate what happens, red line is how it should look… roughly. Anyone have any ideas how to fix it or what causes it?

Hi again,
As I can remember AFR, jason use joints to bind his ikSpline curve to.
head_ctrl>>>parentConstraint>>>neck joints >>>bind to curve>>>ikspline joints

Hi, thanks, I’m already doing that though  They’re hidden in that image.

Because the tip joint of an ik spline is always orient that way. Try draw another joint at the exact same position at the ik spline tip and use that as your bind joint then.

And you can assign weight to your curve by select cuve’s CV and fill in values by going to component editor.

Edit:

That method doesn’t work actually, because the head will stay oriented - but - the neck curves on a weird angle and the head is upright making it look like there’s a massive bulge in the neck.

I don’t think searching for a way to get the ik curve to look like how you’ve drawn it is the right way to go about your problem.

Is your head joint part of the neck joint chain? It shouldn’t be. It should be its own chain, point and orient constrained to the head controller. That way it won’t rotate with the rest of the neck joints.
