My weights are coloring my mesh black

After I start blocking in my weights then go back to object mode the weights are coloring my mesh black. I didn’t know if this was just an artifact or if indeed my mesh was turning black so I rendered a quick image and sure enough it colored the mesh

In the skinCluster node within the Channel Box I turned the “Deform User Normals” to off and the black was removed. The mesh still deformed when moving the clusters. Is this the way to fix it or am I going to run into problems down the road?
