My Urban Sketch Thread (mature content)

Hey, man! No prob! Hope it helps.

Here’s another for today. Gotta love the weekend. Few coffees under the belt. Went and saw the new Hellboy movie today and figured seeming i was on a bit of a high i’d do a quick scribble.

Here’s my posse of sci-fi mercs deploying on a foreign planet…

After watching The golden Army on the weekend I started reading the strange Places graphic novel. Mignola is a genius!

Here’s my humble tribute to Mike Mignola’s Hellboy. Hope i’ve done him justice Mr Mignola!
“I’m not worthy!”

Here’s a color version of Big Red.

bit of sketching practice this morning…

#125

great work again redfrog.

i would push the leg part back in value and hue from the hip down and slightly cover his left side of the hip with the coat just a bit. that whole leg section is popping out a bit too much in my opinion. otherwise, it’s really a great depiction of him i think. really close to mignola but very “redfrog” at the same time. that’s awesome.

Nice call, Jpedro! Didn’t even pick up on that till you pointed it out. Am gonna go back and work that illustration and that will be my first fix! Much appreciated, dude!

I’ve been a bit slack last coupla days by knocked one out this morning. Tried to do my new style over a pencil sketch. Found it a little less fluid and restrictive. Still not 100% sure on what the best technique is but will keep working at it. Obviously this latest technique was a lot slower…hmmm…

today’s morning scribble…

#128

wow …youre black & white sketches are really cool :applause:

#129

Hey Vahn! You’re back, dude!

Thanks for the kind comments! Glad you like the new style. Will have to check your thread…you’ll be churning out masterpieces by now!

Here’s my latest spawn scribble…

saw this photo of a girl in this pose on the net and it sorta reminded me of the conan stuff. I’ve been looking to do a bit of figure studies and lighting studies so the study kinda evolved into this.
Can’t remember who the photo was by but he does do some exceptional b/w nudes with some really dynamic lighting.
the slavemaster i sort of chucked in and made up as i went so not 100% satisfied with the light on him.
this is just sketch practice so full kudos to the photographer that took the photo of the woman. wish i could find the name so i could mention his stuff - it really is great…
will try and track his name down.

Just found the photographer!

His name is Igor Amelkovich.
Check out his work here:-

wow, since the sketchbooks have been moved is it just my imagination or is there no traffic through here? I guess speedpainting is all the rage at the moment.

#132

bit of an update on what i have dubbed the coffee monster. Often seen lurking in the early hours of the morning and late at nite…

#133

Hi redfrog!

Nice going with the new style man! would love to see an update to the demon and girl picture and also thanks for the link… that is some great visual eyecandy to use for inspiration.

I think you are right on the subforum gets less traffic. Me, being a 3d artist, but coming from 2d. I forget to open up this subforum on an almost daily basis just because it is linked at one depth lower than I am used to go. But I keep reminding since this is where some of the better pieces are stored! and one can actually see the progress people make in their work.

BTW what is with the spawn stuff, are you a bit of a closet fanboy? Or have you come across some ubercool stuff that reminded you?

Anyways. Nice day to you and keep the daily scribbles coming!

#134

Hey Matsman!

thanks for the kind words!
In answer to your question - yep, i am definitely a closet fanboy! I love the design of spawn and have always been kinda intersted in comic art.

Here’s a quick concept before bed. My caffeine stores have run out for the day

#135

a real quick sketch before work for a dsg over at conceptart.org

#136

great creature-
btw, a long overdue 5* from me man

i also think you’re right about the traffic…

#137

Always inspiring work! It’s so interesting to study your works. The b/w illustrations are so dynamic and strong in their impression.

#138

Love your work!!! I noticed several of the pics (the black and white ones) are like a grungy scratchy style. Theres so many replies on this thread but I have to ask; did alot of your drawing style just come to you freely? -as opposed to trying to adapt to other particular styles?

Keep it up- Your pics are motivating!

#139

jpedro - thanks dude! seriously man! You are way too kind! Yeah real bummer about the traffic!

VISEone - thanks man! The B/W stuff seems to be working really nicely for me at the moment. Its a pity i can’t say the same for color tho

Shakey1 - thanks heaps! The style i guess was sort of a deliberate adaption of an older more refined style i had. I wanted more organic looser lines. I wanted to really free up my inking style and so at first i had to really push myself to break my traditional methods of working., and as i went i found that this style offered me more freedom it also speed up my processes immeasureably.

By the way folks, I’ve started my own blog if anybody wants to check it out…
