My Review: Dylan Cole's Matte Painting DVD (gnomon)

#1

After watching Dylan Cole’s Matte painting DVDs a number of times, I decided to share my thoughts on it.

Digital Matte Paintings seems to be gaining alot of popularity nowadays with alot of the hollywood blockbusters using them extensively to enhance their VFX. I, like alot of people who are intrigued by the this wonderful art, want to learn how to create and master the art of matte painting. Without having any artistic background (no art classes whatsoever) and never doing any painting before (tradition or digital), the path ahead of me for achieving my goal is definitely gonna be a challenge.

So after reading the positive reviews of Dylan Cole’s DVDs, I decided to try out for myself. Got the Intro to Landscape DVD first, and immediately after watching it, I ordered the others. Dylan has done a fantastic job of explaining his techniques and his sytle which is so simple to follow, even for a starter like myself. The pace of the video seemed a little fast at first, but after watching it a few times I started to get comfortable with it.

The first 2 DVDs (landscape and cityscape) are mainly conceptual, playing around with colors, etc. These DVDs are definitely recommended for anyone who is just starting out because it discusses the fundamentals of digital painting and helps build a strong foundation for creating detailed paintings. On the landscape DVD, he makes 3 paintings using photograph as base, and another 3 from blank canvas… And on the cityscape DVD, he does 1 from blank, and about 6-7 using photograph as base…showing various composition techniques.

The 3rd DVD (advanced) is simply the best. His sytle and technique and his commitment to detail really shine, and he teaches all this in a very simple fashion. However, a good working knowledge of photoshop is required but nothing too crazy. The HUGE amount of knowledge he shares in this DVD is invaluable and will most likely require repeated viewing a number of time before I can absorb it all, and even then I’ll go back to it again and again. Here, Dylan creates 1 huge matte, from concept to final film quality finish. Starting from simple hand drawing, he creates a detailed painting using ALOT of photographic elements…demonstrating techniques in color correction, shadows, highlights, alternate lighting, etc

Added bonus in these 3 dvds, are Dylan’s quick and efficient photoshop tips that he uses throughout the lectures. These tricks have benefitted me immensely, showing me easier ways to achieve the desired photoshop effects.

Overall, Im most impressed by the content of these DVDs and his teaching style is very simplistic and yet very detailed. I personally found the cityscape much easier to begin with, because of the mostly geometric shapes, as opposed to landscape, mainly because Im still struggling with painting random shapes of nature.

I definitely recommend these to anyone who wants to learn the art of matte painting, as long as they have some basic knowledge of photoshop. The educational and inspirational value of these dvds is unparallel.

I thought reviews should point out pro/cons about a product…

so ur saying its flawless?

Have you been able to apply the techniques you have learned? I’d like to see what you have produced… b/c I’m interested in matte painting too, but have no painting experience…

Also, how much does he go into the photoshop tools? In the sample videos, it looked like he just did things via shortcuts and didn’t really talk about the tools, he just showed their effect.

Thanks,
Mechis

I will add to this and i will say that I own every analog gnomon dvd and dylan coles series is flawless. I am not a matte painter. my latest submission to the spectacular contest (see link below) uses many techniques that I would of not thought of had I not seen Cole’s dvd’s… sure there are other techniques all mixed up in there but you get the point.

mechis its not a how to use photoshop dvd. its a how to apply photoshop knowledge to you draw ing if that makes since

@kraal. Thanks for the reply. I totally hear what you’re saying about photoshop. I just asked because I wanted to be sure that I would be able to use the tools the same way that he does… for example, I heard that some people had a hard time following the Ryan Church dvds because they couldn’t get Painter to act the same way. Anyhow, your reply and what witch king have said indicate that dylan cole is pretty good at explaining his process.

Oh, and your spectacular entry is pretty cool

Mechis…I’ve only been painting for about a month now…so I dont really have any of “my own” artwork…but I can show you the ones I painted from watching his DVDs…

All these paintings above have been painted by me…from scratch…after watching his DVDs. They are all included in his DVDs …and one is from DUSSO’s DVD. All of these are actually incomplete…and I will visit them again to clean up the slop and further paint some details as my paitning skills improve.

Here is one of my own that I am working on…from a live video clip

Not bad I think for someone who had never painted anything before I got these DVDs

As for the photoshop tools, Dylan explains the purpose of every photoshop technique he uses atleast once on each DVD…but he wont go into details of every tool, etc. For that, I’ve got Total Training Photoshop CS…which are the best tutorials for photoshop in my opinion.

Cool! Thanks for sharing

not bad there witchking. quite good for starter. i just got the dvds few weeks ago, and they are superb. hopefully soon i will post some of my artwork.

#10

yes he does explain how to use the tools filter ect the way he does… even when things are speed up later they do not edit out the process and he explains that he is doing exactly what he did earlier… so like i said compaired to the dusso videos these are the ones to get…or you can be like me and own them all

dylan is one of the best. heres one I did after his advanced, man did I overdo the clouds or what, after just a few month in mattepainting, I definatly see major flaws in my first one here posted.

that is a awesome painting there roguenroll. nice work.

#14

Wow…very nice work!

#15

Very nice work there roguenroll…I cant paint that good yet…but Im trying hard

Im considering purchasing Ryan Church’s Hi-Tech and Low-Tech painting DVDs for Christmas now. My only little concern is that he uses Corel Painter, which I dont have and have never used…but I think I should be able to follow his teaching…and do the same in Photoshop.

#16

thx, but Im not so great at it yet, thats the beauty of those DVDs, I have a few of them, they are awesome about getting you going quick.

I believe there is one he uses PS, (dark down the street shot with upside down buildings, If I remember - should be one the tech dvds ) but the techniques are quite easliy transferable, but if need more app specific get shueurers or dylan coles DVDs fro Photoshop.
