My future in the 3D industry

#1

Hey everyone, I’m a passionate 3D modeler that lives in Canada currently in his last year of highschool it is time for me to pic a school. I was of either going to a 3D school for a DEC, BAC then go do an AEC in a school such as ESMA or NAD, or do a 1 year
DES at Vancouver Film School (VFS) then go to NAD or ESMA. The thing is, I don’t know how realistic my plan is and if I should go for it. I know a few people that work at Ubisoft and that’s where I would like to go to work in the future. So here are some of my questions:

-Is a 1 year DES and a 1 year AEC too short? (2 years of school before working)
-Is it a good idea to go to these colleges for 3D?
-Is VFS (Vancouver Film School) worth it?
-Do 3D universities exist and is it better to go to one of those or do an AEC?
-What studies did some of you guys do (if you did study in 3D)
-How long could I really work in the industry and still like it?

Here is some more info you might want to know about me:

-I have been 3D modeling for 2 years in Maya, Zbrush, Photoshop and Substance Painter and before that 1 year in blender.
-I have a portfolio ready for College.
-I know other thing’s around 3D such as compositing and video editing.
-I have family that works in the industry.
-My parents support it.

Fellow Canadian here. I did school from around 2012 ~ 2015.
My honest thoughts are, waaaaaaay too expensive for what you learn.

I learned more about 3D modeling from watching free youtube video vs sitting in a classroom.

The Art Industry is a lot different from Medicine or Engineering where people do need a degree to prove themselves.

In fact, school never even gave us tests. We could submit any assignment at the end of the day, and we still got marks for it.

In my first job interview, Art Director didn’t even ask which school I went to. I brought it up for 5 seconds and the rest of the time was spent grilling my portfolio and asking how much 3D software I knew.
