My first infinite loop

Here’s my first infinite loop

It’s an extract from the first music video I’ve done using 3D!

In September last year, I started looking for options to create a music video for one of my songs on the “robot” theme. In the beginning I wanted to customize a real helmet, add lights to give that “electro” look, using an Arduino, leds, etc. but this seemed very involved and in the end… limited. So I thought: why not try to make it in 3D? As I had Cinema4D Light as part of m After Effect bundle, it was worth a try. So here we are, several months later, I did it!

I know there’s a lot of room for improvement :stuck_out_tongue: It was an extraordinary path to learn all the tips to try to bring changes and excitement all along the music video. It ain’t short so that was quite a challenge! I think my biggest reward is several of my friends who thought I had shot these images for real  (I guess they only looked on their smartphone :stuck_out_tongue: ).

For reference here are a few topics I had to learn:

Cinema4D Lite

  • Music animation of material, lights and objects with Xpresso/Coffee (without Sound Effector - not part of C4D light)
  • Camera animation
  • Visible light
  • Infinite loop
  • Deformations (for body movements + head transformation)

AE:

  • 3D camera tracking
  • Fake Light rays
  • Fake motion blur
  • Motion blur
  • Export to C4D

Premiere Pro:

  • Edition
  • Light corrections
  • Film grain

Well let me be the first to say congratulations on finishing. That right there is usually the hardest part.

  • Has a good vibe and moves pretty well from scene to scene.
  • Good use of blackout to hide any imperfections.
  • The robot mouth is a little off putting at first. I think it’s because I’m seeing a human shape and then it’s mouth opens like a raptor.
  • The heart at 2:10 is very low poly. I think it takes away from the rest which it pretty consistent quality wise.

Good job! 4:50 is a lot of frames ain’t it.

Thanks a lot for the comments Wyatt. :keenly:

Yes, making the mouth of the helmet move like a raptor ain’t the most natural thing - my initial idea was to make the mouth area lighten to the voice volume, but this was too static; so I tried animating the lower helmet part to the voice, and did not try another approach then. Maybe I could have done something with more articulated pieces?

Agreed also for the hearth; I tried to rework it slightly but with C4D Light it’s tough. Ideally I would have smoothed it with more polys but was definitely lacking the tools :-/

The black night was my friend in this music video; I have to confess I used the same trick when doing my previous music video , which was not with CGI). My next challenge will be to do something that happens in daylight!

No worries. I just meant my initial reaction. After that, I thought it was cool.

Hey, use what works. I think this one works very well.

Personally, I found that very endearing as it made the character much more distinctive.

Again, and not to harp on you or anything, I really liked it. I personally felt it added to the whole retro vibe that I was getting from the video, whether it was intentional or not. While I do not think that there was anything remotely similar in it, it felt like something that would have been in either The Mind’s Eye collection or Captain Powers.
