Its time to go back and polish everything. Will have to throw and redo some parts.

XXXXXXXXX OLD POST XXXXXXXXXX
Hi fellas,
I’ve just completed my fourth term in VFS, and felt that it’s time to post my WIP to get your feedback.

The title of my reel is Fishing. Not fishing in the traditional sense, but you’ll see what I mean.
The grey simple environment is by design, I left it bare minimum to give myself more time for animation.

Hello,

Just to point out a few things I noticed to help you on your way

-At 6 seconds the face looks like its at the default pose. I would animate a look from kinda puzzled to a happy surprise expression.

-At 11 sec anticipation is over exagerated. I would knock it down by at least 75%

-17 sec when he’s thinking i would raise an eyebrow to add more emotion to it.

-the rest of the movie when he walks back and then jumps an runs forward needs some hip animations. Also the walk back is a bit too bouncy i would make it a little less.

These are some of the bigger things I noticed there are a lot of other little things but I would first tackle these issues.

Take it Easy,

Justin

Yay! A reply, finally. Thanks!

Yeah, I have not animated the face yet, So all you get are blank stares in the close up shots. Its a low priority right now till I get the general acting and posing right. In fact I’m re doing some of these shots again to really push it.

Yeah the take was a little too crazy, just throwing some animator’s survival kit stuff on there for fun.

I mixed in a double bounce when he walks away, I’m still not too happy with how it looks right now, I may follow your suggestion to tone it down.

Status:
Started on the 2nd half of the reel.
Will come back to polish the first half at a later date.

The general feedback is that my reel has a very uniform rhythm to it. Any specific comments to how I could improve the Rhythm / texture in my animation is welcome (animation texture, not material textures). The music is just a place holder, I’m not animating the beats to it.

I think overall you need to track all the parts of the body and make sure your arcs are cleaner. I think you could push the posing overall as well. There’s a lot to go over since there are multiple shots. I could go over some parts in detail if you would like to give you an idea to what I’m saying. If so, just let me know and send me an email at cshields214@gmail.com

I really like the dynamics in your story. Wasn’t expecting the giant octopus. I kinda wonder if there is a way to let introduce the audience to the octopus, or at least that it’s him that is fishing, earlier in the piece.

Great job man and keep it up!

Feel free to ask me any questions, I’m going to school and learning just like you are.

Cheers!

Thanks cshields,

My animation is really looking raw right now, good thing I still have some time to polish.
My latest update here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UmcJZye2U4g

I feel that shot 8 with the dive, run and trip is my golden shot, so most of my effort will be spent there.
Speaking of pushing poses, I’m actually looking to tone down some of the grabs, Most of my grabs have a stong antic that pushes his hand back behind his head before grabbing, I’m trying to change one or two into a quick flick to vary the tempo.

Unfortunately, I’ve locked down most of the shots at this point in time. Regarding the octopus thing, I wanted the audience to get a feeling the character is being pranked and only reveal it to be the octopus at the end. I also played down the existence of that fishing hook since my first storyboards.

Ok cool!

I could do a draw over of your shot 8 if you would like. Just upload it to somewhere I could go frame by frame, like dropbox or something.

Best of luck man
