i recorded some footage in 1080p and the file format came out to be mxf is there any way to convert that into .mov or .avi format so i could use to edit it in after effects? and also to bring it down to 720p =]

What camera?
The cameras manfacturer should offer some conversion software.
If not, try installing avid quicktime codecs.

Please be more specific! AE supports basic MXF files (plain profile) ever since the 8.0.2 update for CS3, but it does not support specific Avid MXF or other variations.
