Multiple UVs for single object

#1

Hi

So I’m doing some research on texturing and one of the questions that has popped up is: If I have a highly detailed model, say a character with belts, buckles, gloves etc. and they are very intricate, is it recommended to keep the textures to one single set of UVs or to make multiple UVs to allow more detail on those other objects.

Example:
Mesh consisting of base body, clothes, belts and gloves

UV example 1: Everything is on one set of UVs
UV example 2: The different parts are on seperate UVs

Does anyone have any good experience with either? Making a game character I would probably keep everything as one, but for a movie where there isn’t a very hard limit, perhaps I would use the second example? I haven’t found a good clear answer just googling, but I might not have used the right search words.

Any thoughts?

for feature film you will have to use hundreds of textures…
the belt alone would have one ore multiple 2k textures…
depending on how close you get there with the camera…

take a look here at this cinematic chars…
