Multipasses in xStream and Max

I have been corresponding with e-on support on an issue regarding multipasses and which renderer calculates the specific elements of that render. They say they are looking into it, but its been a while and i was wondering if this problem occurs in any other 3d package with vue Xstream? Or if anyone has developed a work around?

This is what i sent to e-on:
If i have a plane in MAX with a reflective MR shader and a Vue tree sat on top, where does the reflection pass come from? as Mental ray in max does not have the vue tree in its reflection pass and VUE does not have it in its reflection pass? Yet the data is calculated, as a straight render has the vue tree reflecting in the max plane.
