Mudbox Texture question....

#1

I am trying to weigh up which program would be better to texture in…Mudbox or zbrush…I have been advised to look at ZApplink in zbrush and looking at a tut on youtube…it looked quite clunky compared to the photoshop linking abilities in mudbox. (again looking at another tut on youtube)

So basically I would like to paint my textures from photo/real life and I want to clear up a workflow just in my mind to begin with -

I want to model out old rough/distressed/worn out etc objects for an animation. Lets say I want to model this:

Old Door
Now if I have gone and taken detailed photographs of the textures and adjusted them in Photoshop, whats the best workflow for applying photo textures to a model in Mudbox?

I was looking at the zbrush technique of zapplink and the textures just seemed kind of crushed or flattened - maybe the bump / displacement maps had not been generated…i am not sure

any tips would be great

i would use the images as a stencil and do all the work in mudbox…
for cleanup work you could use PS to project on… File --> export screen to PSD…
but there is no need for PS…

i would use the mudbox image viewer to send the image to the stencil…
there is a icon with a green arrow and an S for in the image browser…

you can open up the imagebrowser also als floating window on the second monitor…
windows --> imagebrowser

Lets say I want to model something like this out in Zbrush - (modeled from the photograph and textured from the image as well)

Old picture frame

With all of the detail, how would you go about applying the texture from the photograph - with the technique we discussed wouldnt the texture warp around the different areas of indention/detail?

Or would I have to start to mess around with the image first in PS?

Thanks (just trying to get things straight in my head before rushing in)

for this i would bake a ao map or some shaders in maya/turtle…
and paint a texture in PS…
