Mudbox Newbie's Quiz

#1

Hello, All

I am a newbie for mudbox, I used to using Zbrush, just wanna try mudbox 2011 rencently. have some simply quiz wanna ask mudbox seniors…

1: Mudbox seems render speed much slow than ZB, especially model up to millions poly…isn’t it?
Render speed is the one most exiting function let me forgot my computer was already quite outdate…ha~ but mudbox…when my poly up to millions…it looks remind me that i am using a Snail…

2: Mudbox 2011 can generate UV map yet?
ZB ver.3 has a UV master plugin, which is the best UV mapping plugin i have never seen before. So simple and easy to use. Mapping result is wonderful. But how about Mudbox 2011 so far? Must generate in MAYA first?

3: Did Mudbox has HD-geometry sculpt function like ZB had? That’s very cool thing can make unlimited poly model. I didn’t find any function like that in Mudbox so far, please tutor me.

In return, i really please using Mudbox paint texture directly into modol, that’s a new function in ZB-4 but mudbox already did.

I am very appreciated anyone reply my quiz.
Thank you all~

  1. Mudbox has a higher poly count limit, and its performance is GPU related. Zbrush is CPU related. They both have equal polycount limits on 32bit, but Mud is also truly 64bit, hence the higher poly count. Mud also requires a decent graphics card which is why it wont perform well on laptops or older machines.

  2. Mudbox does not generate UVs, its intended to integrate with an existing 3d app, so it will focus on tools that standard 3d apps do not already have.

  3. Mud does not have an HD feature. But then, if you are using a 64bit machine with 16gb of RAM, you can work with 40million polygon meshes which is essentialy what Zbrush is doing with HD.

-the nature of your questions suggest that you want to use Zbrush because it has all in one feature set to create finished illustrations. Mudbox is not intended for that, it is intended for sculpting geometry for creating texture maps, normal maps, and displacement maps. It is not a modelling application, and because it is supposed to integrate with othe applications, the UI and workflow are standardized to the other applications.
