Mudbox 2009 QuickStart Series: Wayne’s Easy Layerd PSD Trick

OK, I now a lot of you have been after a quick and simple way to merge all your textures into a psd. So Dave Cardwell and myself sat on Skype tonight and while testing things out…I managed to come up with the following workflows for merging all textures in a folder into one document. There is a workflow using Photoshop CS2 or CS4 straight out of the box. It is also possible with CS3 but alas I didn’t own it to video the workflow. You can then use all your textures layers in anyway that you wish in photoshop and as a layered document.

So you are being listened to and all comments taken on board by the Mudbox crew.
Enjoy

Mudbox Quickstart Series: Common User Errors

This video outlines a couple of the more prevelant user errors and their solutions. The one below is a temporary solution for those wishing to import an already painted set of multi UV textures into mudbox. The guys will also be releasing a mel script very soon to help with the maya side of things for those that use it.

If you just choose RGB colors and save them in a HDR image format, that still doesn’t give you an image with a high dynamic range, that can be used for lighting purposes, does it?

Mudbox 2009 Quick Start series: Mudbox to XSI (32 bit displacement maps)

Mudbox Quickstart Series: Mudbox to XSI (32 bit displacement)

This quick start video is rather topical this time. I thought I’d cover getting your mudbox 2009 32 bit displacement maps working well inside of XSI. It shows how to get the best quality out of your map in (hopefully) an easy to replicate way. For this tutorial I’m only using a 2k displacement map that was exported as a OpenEXR file from mudbox. This time its recorded at 800x600 res and encoded as an AVI so that its easier to see what I’m doing, although everything is explained anyway.

Mudbox 2009 Quick Start Series: Setting up a mirrored UV Set in 3D Max

Link (Quicktime required)

The only purpose of this video is to show you how to aproach setting up a mirrored UV set for games (or other reasons) using 3d max to simply get a normal map without any issues at all. If you try simply overlaying the left and right hand UV sets the you will in many cases run into problems as you are then effectily using overlapping UV’s (which are a bit of a no-no for digital sculpting as a general rule.)So this video shows you what I think is the simplest way to approach this common problem.

Mudbox 2009 QuickStart Videos - Rendering 32 Bit displacement in 3D Max

Link (Quicktime required)

In this video I show you how to set up 32 bit displacement maps on your models using 3d max with mental ray as your render engine. It was supposed to show a bug that catches out many new users, but I manage to find a work around on the fly during the video that is far simpler than the one I had planned to record.

wayne, i just watched one of your tuts about detailing that characters face and you had those stencils that you used for the wrinkles that were done so that they matched areas of the face. I think somewhere in there you mentioned posting those at some point. Did you ever happen to post those? They’d come in handy while trying to learn the app.

Thanks for the tutorials, they are very helpful

#14

No I’ll be covering how to make those seperately at some point…those particular stencils are kept under lock and key at the moment lol.

thanks. Your videos on mudbox are great, i gave up on digital sculpting a few years ago because i was using zbrush and couldn’t stand the interface. Mudbox has made me dive in again and your stuff only makes it easier.

Its good to hear that your giving digital sculpting another go. Its possible to get used to any UI in time with partience…although its also possible to get used to being repeatidly kicked in the head by a 40 stone man… but it doesn’t mean that everyone would want to though lol.

Mudbox 2009 QuickStart Videos - Mud 2 Vray (32 bit Displacement maps)

AVI Link (Techsmith encoded)
Iphone Format Version

I had a fair few requests for a video on V-ray showing 32 bit displacement maps. This one is sort of an amalgamation of all the info thats available here on TheArea along with a idea of two of my own. It also outlines a way to use multi UV tiled displacement along with Vray and exaplains how to get perfect renders every time.

I had to pull in a favour to do this one as I dont own Vray and had to lend a mates laptop, so hopefully it’ll help. So as a result I have access to it for between 1-2 weeks.
Enjoy
