mudbox 2009 64bit: spikes appearing after subdivision

Hi,

when I import my model from maya (checked for nonmanifold geometry) and start subdividing it in mudbox2009 i get some really weird, thin spikes popping up in places. has anybody seen this before and does anybody know how to deal with them?
when i subdivide the model inside maya to the same degree this does not occur?
