mr Proxy issues in Max 2010x64

#1

Hi everyone. I’m having a problem with mr Proxies - namely, when I get above certain polycounts, my proxy .mib file comes back 5kb and obviously doesn’t save any of the mesh data. If I render, it still ‘translates’ the object, and reflects a proper polycount, but the render is blank.

I work in the scientific visualization field where we have hundreds or thousands of datasets/objects, generally more than a million polys each with unique topologies. We’re using a custom render farm manager to pull in the appropriate dataset per frame and render out the correct result, but I’m trying to switch over to mr_Proxies to get us back to Backburner. If I can properly create an animated mr_Proxy, I should be home free.

Basically all of my data sets give me a 5kb proxy file, the ‘Rendered Tri’s’ parameter reflects the correct number, but the point cloud just contains 1 point in the top corner, no matter what I do to the “Viewport Verts” slider.

I did another test with an extremely dense sphere - when the sphere was about 500,000 polys, it made a correct proxy. When I passed about 800,000, it started dumping out the 5kb files. Anyone have any ideas? If not about this problem, any ideas about other solutions to loading in huge animated sequences of objects automatically that will still render correctly via Backburner?

Thanks a lot!

Don’t know if you’ve found a solution yet, but I had the exact same problem in MAX2009 with high poly objects. I was trying to save the .mib over a network shared drive which had worked fine until I tried a 2 mil poly object. I ended up with the one dot proxy that wouldn’t show up in a render. Solution for us was to save the .mib on a local drive, and then copy that file to the share, then update the location/reference in MAX for the object to network render.

Thanks for the suggestion - I’ll give that a try… I too was trying to save the .mib’s onto a network drive, I’ll try this at the office tomorrow and let you know if it worked.

Wow, that worked. I’m saving them to a big local hard drive now and they work fine - annoying that I’ll have to copy them all back out to the network drive afterward, but at least it works! Thanks for the help!

No problem. I’ve mined all kinds of data out of these forums… feels good to contribute for once!
