Mouth Tut?

#1

I’ve been struggling with splining a good mouth. I’m currently working on a model that has a very simple mouth - effectively a straight line. But I’m not sure how to spline around it so that I’ll effectively get the right shapes for sounds. :banghead:

I’ve cracked open lots of the models that come with AM and looked at them, but I guess my inexperience is blinding me :hmm:

Are there some standard rules? Any tips are appreciated.

Have you tried Colin Freeman’s tutorials?

I did run through Colin’s head tut. So I did put in the mouth as he suggested. I guess my problem is I’m not sure how to translate that from a human mouth to a non-human straight across mouth.

So for example, looking at Colin’s - the mouth seems to have 3 horizontal splines for each lip, with 5 point patches on each corner of the mouth. Would you say that is the minimum you need to get the expressions I need?

Hi Tom,

If you go to Victor Navone’s website, you can see how he modeled his Big Bang Giant’s mouth.

And specifically, this image:

I would model it with the fewest amount of splines as possible and add any more that are needed after you test out your mouth poses.
