A big bottleneck I have is importing cad files. If someone send me a solid works file, I open it in inventor, export an Iges file, and then import that to 3ds max.
On a large cad file, this can take hours and hours. I have a 500 meg file now that took 4 hours to open, and it has been hours trying to save the Iges and I have no idea how long it will be.
How can I speed this kind of thing up? Is it just processor speed?
To the best of my knowledge this depends mostly on single threading speed (Single core performance) and to a smaller degree on disk IO speed.
Import into Rhino, it should not be problem at all /offcourse, you have to own some copy of Rhino/ and save as *.OBJ.
Than, import like OBJ into 3DS MAX.
So, main goal is to make *.OBJ in anyway, because in the OBJ is the salvation.
I passed through your path, and I remember well of 6h importing, and when you import it, finally, you can do nothing with such a file!

PS - OBJ could make even bigger file, but do not care about that, it will works very smoothly in 3DS MAX.
PS 2 - Not *.FBX! but *.OBJ!

Hmmm I’m going to download a trial version and try that. N power translator works pretty good for getting the iges, but maybe this will be a better path. Thanks!!
Can you import X_T files into Inventor, than export like IGES/STEP, import into Rhino. and than export like OBJ?
Sounds frustrating, but if you find it works, it will make your life more easy.
I tried one that path (iges from inventor; then obj from rhino) at the default setting and it came out a mess in 3ds max. I probably need to tweak something.
But I can get stp from inventor and that comes in pretty decent to Max. File size is smaller than with iges import. The file size with iges is a problem. My 500M X_T became a 1G iges file, and that choked max to death.
