MoonScene first post/first matte

#1

Hi all
I’m new to posting on these forums but i’ve found them really inspiring and useful.
I thought it was time to get involved.

I studied 2D animation at university (specializing in backgrounds/layout design) but i’d like to move over more into matte painting now.
This is one of my first attempts based on a painting I did for a graduation animation.

Any opinions, thoughts, critique are much appreciated as I want to improve fast
I’ve also had ago at projecting it in maya.
Cheers!

The original painting done about a year and a half ago.

looks great ! the concept art is awesome as well, I think you need some rim light on the trees and maybe a little bit of the moon light over the ground, some foreground or middleground elements would help the composition and would give more sense of scale and details
great work ! keep it up

hey Harry, good to see you knocking around on here. You’re in good company i can tell you

For a first matte this is great. It fits together well and looks real

My only real crit is that your matte has lost a little of the drama and atmos of the concept. For example you’ve got some really strong shapes in the far mountains with the moonlight hitting them etc…this feels a bit dumbed down in the matte. Same for the trees. Would also be good if you could keep some of the mist as that really adds to the image.
I agree with James about the moonlight/highlights.

Don’t be afraid to keep the strongest parts of your original. Even if they seem stylised find a way to keep them whilst getting them to a photoreal level.

I am just being picky though, great job overall and good luck with your interview!
