Molten Landscape - WIP - Critique Wanted

#1

I started this a couple days ago, starting with a simply sketch(seen below).

Currently im keeping everything pretty muted until I start to complete more of what im aiming for in my head, then I will start to selectively add saturation to areas as well as boost light levels after I illuminate the lava. The sky is going to be replaced with a sunset type but obviously darkened by the ash plumes from the volcanoes. The beige vertical lines in the color sketch are indicating buildings, and for these I was leaning towards industrial with a steampunk flair.

Im also still playing around with the foreground elements, but below is also a concept I have for those.

Also I apologize if this is a double post. I know my first two are validated however ive posted two already and my post for this landscape didnt seem to make the cut.

hi, the concept is cool, the 3 volcanos could be a nice flow for the visual composition, I think you have to think about the lighting, if you are adding a sunset sky maybe the sun can still lit the volcanos and could add a nice rim light to them , also keep in mind that the same sun will lit the huge smoke columns on them and you have to work in all that to integrate all in one single image, the foreground elements are nice, I would like to sse a more detailed WIP so I can see what; do you exactly have in mind, also I woul add a little wind to the huge pyroclastic clouds, that could give some dynamic feel to the entire image
looking forward to see more

Hey James,

I very much appreciate the feedback. Its been a bit difficult to get back to this painting due to the amount of server outages at work lol. Thats what we get for using untested SUN Storage.

Anywho here is a small update of what I was thinking about for sky lighting. Im still trying to get a handle on the lighting. I will have a more detailed WIP later in the week.

Nice WIP,

It’s cool that you are keeping it up to date. If I would say anything it would be that your volcanoes are all kinda the same height (from the viewers POV) so maybe deciding which one is most important and making that the tallest. And perhaps pulling down the farthest one.

Keep it up!

cool work Runic

Nice to see it starting to come to life. My thoughts are personally i don’t think you need the buildings. I think working on them will distract you from concentrating on the most important parts of this image- getting the volcanoes and lava looking perfect. I also think they will distract the viewer from looking at the volcanoes, which i think are the best bits.
Having said that it would be interesting to see what kind of architecture would inhabit this environment.

My main crit with what you’ve already done is that the left side volcano looks too conical and straight for me. I think it would look better if it was broken up a little and was more mountain like like the volcano on the right.

Altogether it’s got the potential to be a great matte with a nice atmosphere
