ok this is my first time using modo and i am REALLY confused… lol. does anybody know where i can find some good tutorials to get me started on learning the basics?
Modo Tutorial Sites
Aside from the tutorials bundled with the software and those on the
Luxology website, about the best resource seems to be tutorials for Lightwave (which require some degree of deciphering/adapting to utilize with Modo). It’s unfortunate, but Modo seems to be targeted towards those users with some familiarity with existing techniques and workflows in other apps, primarily Lightwave - their docs seem to place much more emphasis on ‘this is how Modo differs from what you already know’ than ‘this is Modo and this is how you get things done’. You’re not the only one who’s lost.
Sorry about this, I’m confused also…
I’m sure you have video tutorials, user guide to get you pick up fast…those are ‘good tutorials’…
Cheers.
No doubt coming from somebody experienced with sub-d/poly modeling in another app. For the user without this foundation, Luxology doesn’t supply the user with a great deal of information beyond navigating the Modo interface and working with tools unique to Modo. Documentation covering subdivision modeling technique/benefits/limitations is sorely lacking, so any user approaching the application without sub-d modeling experience with another app is bound to be confused. As it stands, Modo best lends itself as an extension to the experienced user’s existing workflow - it’s a poor choice for those getting into sub-d modeling for the first time, and only because the documentation is lacking.
I’d say modo is an excellent choice for the first-time polygonal modeler. And while it’s only a 1.0 release, things are laid out quite clearly. I wish a program like modo was around when I was starting to model–It would of saved me miles of wandering in the wilderness.
I do think modo has a good start on the training materials, but we are never satisfied! Take a look at the forums at our main site www.luxology.com in the support section. This week we hope to be posting some new tutorials to assist with more basic modeling. For the complete beginner you might also start with the tutorial included with modo that takes you through creating a little alien fish. It shows a lot of the basic concepts around SUBD as well as falloffs and tool pipe.
More to come!

Cool! so far I have been truly impressed with the help system. The activate help and then click on somthing showing the description along with a video has been great.
we have just created a new section on www.vertexmonkey.com for tutorials. If anyone has or knows of a good tutorial that would benefit the community, fire the link over too me and we will get it posted.

I have also found that some of the polygon modeling tutorials for Maya can be translated to Modo and will help you familiarize yourself with some of the advantages and benefits to having great edge tools.
