modo book

#1

Hi all -
just a note to let you know that my book “The Official Luxology modo Guide” is now shipping. More info: http://www.luxology.com/store/training_materials.aspx

Thanks!

Congrats on the book Dan. I was just about to start a new thread asking what the easiest way to learn Modo might be, but maybe your book will be the answer. I’ve been wanting to learn Modo for a while now, and with 2.02 I’d really like to get started. I’m coming from Carrara and Blender, so Modo seems very foreign to me. Any other advice? BTW, found your book on Amazon and put it on my “shopping list”.

I will obviously try to put a hand on one of these - congrats on this new publication

#4

Thanks guys -
well I’d say the first way to learn modo is use the manual and the tutorial videos that come with the software.

From there, the cheapest way is to get the book.

Probably the fastest and easiest way is to use the 3D Garage Signature Courseware for modo (www.3dgarage.com). It’s an A to Z, from the ground up 201/202 high quality quicktime based training course (15 hours).

And, I’m available online as well.

Hang in there - you’ll get it.

Well if the book is as half as good as the Courseware DVD then count me in, it was one of the best tutorial DVD’s I’ve seen (& I’ve seen a lot). I learnt a heck of a lot & the structure of learning is ace, my new Mantra is [B] for Bevel…

I’ll order the book when I order Modo I think…

Nice one Dan…

Thanks very much -
there’s different projects, a few more technical explanation of things, and 4 plus hours of brand new video tutorials on the book’s DVD. Also, you should know that Luxology is selling the book as well on their storefront. So if you’re ordering modo from them, you can get a book too.

Thanks again.

I’m very much interested in learning Modo. I’m glad the book is finally coming out. I can’t wait to get my handsI think that my local bookstore is getting tired of me calling them to see if the book is in. By the way Dan, I had not realized that you offered coursware on learning Modo as well. I’ll look to purchase that as well. If it’s like any of your Lightwave courseware that I’ve purchased in the past, then I’m sure my ramp-up time to using this wonderful software will be minimized. Therefore, while it may seem like it’s cheaper to not buy the courseware, I think that it’s a better use of my time and less stress on my body/mind to buy the training materials that I need when it comes to getting the most out of complex software like Modo.

At any, sign me up for both courseware & the book. Congradulations on both the book and the courseware!

Thanks Panadar - appreciate it.

You are correct about learning. Time is money. I’ll give you an example. We had a guy call on a Friday afternoon - he needed to get up to speed with modo over the weekend to finish a project the following week. We overnighted a course to him for Saturday delivery. He called a week later. He didn’t think he’d be able to learn the software that quickly.

Now, I can’t take all the credit. modo makes it very easy to create and render beautiful models… I just show you the way.

Hi Dan,
I have a question about your new book. I’m thinking of getting it, but I’m only working with modo 103. Can’t really afford the upgrade right now. Can I use your book in conjunction with 103, or is the toolset just too different from 201/202?

Thanks for your help!!

#10

Ideally, you’d want to use any training material for the specific version you have. The Official Luxology modo Guide is written for 202. So, much of it won’t apply to 103. But the modeling techniques would work for you.

#11

Thanks for the response Dan. I think I’ll give it a look!

#12

Thanks -
and hey, are you in Schaumburg? So’s our studio! Feel free to stop in for a visit - let me know first…

#13

Dan, you’re kidding me!? I’d love to stop in sometime! Where are you guys located? I was going to write and ask some 103 questions, but I guess I could just ask them in person LOL! Let me know where you’re at and I’ll be sure to stop in and see what you’re working on…after calling first, that is.

We’re at Meacham and Tower, across from Morton’s / Costco / Prairie Rock.

Email me dablan at earthlink dot net

#15

cool dan, thanks. you’re studio is about 1 minute from my house. i’ll drop you a line sometime. it’d be a great chance for a noob like me to see some real 3d stuff first hand.

#16

is this available at our local bookstores yet? or just through luxo?

#17

It will be in stores. I went to a local B&N today, but didn’t see it yet. Normally it takes a good month before books show up in the stores. You see, the book stores use distributors. So, once the book it out, it goes to a distribution center. Then they go to regional stores. Then some monkey in the back has to get around to unpacking them and finding room on the shelves between the Barnes & Noble brand books now taking up space, and the ever-growing Photoshop books.

Borders is often better.

Amazon has been selling it for weeks. And cheap too!

hey dan, i went and grabbed the only copy of your book they had here in schaumburg (at borders of course.) awesome book! i really like the straightforward tutorial approach you went with. it was great to get started right away. i went ahead and bit the bullet and upgraded to 202 as well. thank goodness for birthday money!

i do have a question about the extra tutorial vids. when do you think they’ll be posted? i’m really excited to see the toy gun one.

That Borders is great - always has my books

Thanks for picking it up.
I’m working on the extra videos this week. I hope to finish them by the weekend.
But I also need to prepare for my Apple modo demo Saturday, and finish a few other things for some other projects…
