modeling crank rod

I’m not quite sure what this thing is even called, but I’m modeling a crank/lever/elevating system and need to know the best way to model the rod in the middle where the object that will be moving up and down is attached.

My best way describing it is a mix between a drill bit and the barber shop striped pole.

I made a mock model, but I feel like the technique I’m using is not the easiest/fastest way to do it.

I would love any and all advice/tutorials that could help me model this better.

Could you post a reference image of what you are trying to achieve? I am not sure if you mean an engine crank or more of a drill bit?

From what I can tell you would be best just extruding your object up, making a few loop cuts, and then either rotate with soft select, or use the twist modifier.
