modeling an old-timer Merc 170D

Hi guys,
I am doing this for a friend who bought it so I hope in January I’ll be able to use real photos for modeling but I wanted to start earlier. Drawings were impossible to find online for this sedan model so I had to improvise with photos and one side drawing. I’m doing a test modeling first. I just wanted to model this part above the wheel. I’m doing a spline cage, then mesh smooth. Do you think I made too many vertices? It’s a complex shape and I want it to be smooth.

I would really appreciate help on this project from someone experienced in car modeling. I’m an expert for interiors, been doing them for 8 years, but I’ve only tried one car back when I started 3D

thanks in advance!

To get “perfect” curves you should model with polygons and keep density to a minimum, add a subdivision modifier on top of the mesh while you model so you can visisualize how the cage will smooth.

Keeping density down ensures a better averaged curvature, using too many edges will create unwanted surface bumps that are difficult to fix.
