Modeling a coin

#1

I have been looking around trying to find tutorials on modeling coins, but the only tutorial that seems to come up is modeling a euro. I am trying to create a custom coin with a persons face on it (whos? I’d prefer not to mention). Im using 3DS Max 2016 but i cant seem to figure it out. Ive tried displacement mapping like you would with landscapes for height maps; but it didnt turn out well. Can someone help me with this?

Ive also been trying to do text but its also difficult to find tutorials to model words in such a way…Help?

What is the use for the coin, is for for games (low poly)??

Is it for media and broadcast whereas perhaps nurbs and physics for animation may be more suitable?

As mentioned before me, it matters a lot if it goes to a game engine or not.
It also matters if the coin will have a close shot on it. If so, you may be better off sculpting it using ZBrush, Mudbox, Blender or Sculptris - the last two are free.
I don’t know how you wish to render, but Blender treats displacement maps pretty fine, just need to plug in a non-color data black and white texture to the displacement node and you are fine (other apps, I don’t know). In blender remember the 50% gray means no displacement.
If it will be a distant shot, just use normal maps. You can do it in Gimp or Photoshop, Corel etc (Gimp is free) and use the software xNormals which is free as well, to convert it to a normal map.
