Hello everybody!
Did you try to capture dog’s movements? Can you give me some advice on the topic?
What is the best way to place markers on dogs? Shall I make a special costume?
Any difficulties to foresee?
Thanks in advance.

Hi Anna,
we have tried in the past to capture a dog. With no really useful results.
Either it was a film trained dog, the dog do not really move with markers on his body, he tries to get them off.
So, our experience is, dogs do not work for motion capturing.
We captured a goat, this is no problem, the goat moves normal without trying to get the markers off.
Hope this helps you out.
best regards,
Rudi
well we have recently captured mocap from a dog and had excellent results. Judging by what Dioginho said it may be the temperment of the dog. To answer your questions…
yes the dog should have a customized costume, the marker placement will be slightly different on each dog
advice would be to have a dog that is well trained and obedient, lots of treats to keep their attention, lots of water, have a few of the same motions captured, do it all in one day
difficulties could be a loss of interest for the dog, foot pads might fall off, the dog tires out because of a lack of breaks. You will have to rely on an animator to be able to extrapolate on some of the movements that may have been bad, particularly the leg movement.
I’m not an expert on this. I’m a tracker so I don’t deal with the actors directly, I just know from being on stage, observing how the animal reacted and what was done. Anyways I hope that helps.
Good Luck! ![]()
Thanks a lot!
I think your pieces of advice will help!
We are planning only 1 session of dog capture, so I wonder, should we really make a special costume and attach markers to it for this occasion, or is there some more simple way of placing markers on a dog?
Thanks
from what Dioginho said…if you do not have a suit the dog will be busy picking off the markers. Imagine markers being stuck to your skin…not very comfortable and very distracting. In the end it will be worth it because the dog should be focused on what moves it is to make. I hope that helps…keep me posted, I’m interested in the final results.
Thanks a lot, Favian,
we will keep that in mind. We are already thinking that keyframe animation of dog movements would be easier… Will keep you informed in case we make up our minds to use mocap, notwithstanding all difficulties!
