Mip Map

#1

Is it possible to use mip map on images with nodes? When for example u load an image in the texture panel. You get the option to enhance the image by using mip map or and gaussian filters on the image and also the option to repeat the loaded image. (under map image tab in blender 2.4)(under image sampling in blender 2.5)

When u load the image using nodes. You can imput the image and stick that in a output node. But there are no options anymore to use this mip map or repeat functions? This results in jaggy image mapping when there are to many pixels.

Load the image as a texture in nodes.

It depends if you are doing this in material or texture nodes. In material you have option to do this. I don’t know why but sometimes it doesn’t work as expected so then just do instead a shadeless material with texture mapped to color. In texture nodes there is no option to do this. Theoretically you could set many instances of texture translation with different vectors but it is very tedious, very slow in execution and looks crappy.

The problem is, i made a nice scene with a HDRI map to use in the environment. There is as far as i know no option to use a material node, only a texture node is available. When i load the image trough the texture panel, everything is nice and smooth rendered in my reflections on the object. But when i load the image using nodes. You get a very sharp jaggy result. When i dont use nodes the image is smoothed out using the mip map option but this is not available with nodes. So it really is annoying not having this option in node editing. A blur could also be handy but this is only available in compositing nodes. Maybe with this extra information on what i’m trying to archive, maybe someone could give me some tips how to solve this situation. I could just use the texture panel to fix it but using nodes is so much nicer and advanced to work with. On the other hand, there is not a lot of advanced nodes tutorials out there for blender so i get the idea that the blender community does not make allot of use of nodes in there projects except when they are doing compositing Or when they want to create a advanced procedural texture. Anyway, I was very pleased that i got your reply on this. So thanks.

as phil3d said, load the image as a normal texture then load that texture datablock in the nodes as a texture input not just a image input, bit of an hassle, but it works:

Hey thanks, must have overlooked Phil’s post, sorry for that phil :frowning: Back to happy blendering :stuck_out_tongue:
Thanks for clearing it out and for the little illustrated picture. I’m new to blender and at first i was very sceptic about the program. But after some test I’m really am enjoying every moment i spend on blender. I’m already getting good results after playing like 2 months with it and the modelling is really attractive once you get used to it. On the modelling front it still misses some features but its already very powerfull.

But one gets quite ugly effect when using mipmaps with heavy blur plus mapping normal or reflection. It is often better to do bluring in Gimp, because the only other solution is really slow.

Nice tip Dac, thanks
