Minas Tirith Project || Part 2

#321

I just heard from Flavien (Ysaneya) that the realtime demo generated a crazy 39GB data. Since that is (of coarse) way over his bandwith limit, he had to put it offline in order to avoid finincial bankruptcy… The website generated a lot of datatraffic too, so we will have to host it soon on a server supplied by 3ddy. There’s no bandwith limit, but it’s not the fastest line in the world, 64K. But I’m very happy that he wanted to help us out, thanks 3ddy!
So please be a little patient when trying to load the page.

I think that it is time to search a sponsor for hosting this project …

#322

Hi! I want to join the project. I’m using 3dsmax and some times Softimage|XSI. You can look at my recent wip here http://zeruel.free.fr/wip/

Pjanssen, try reaching communities like gamer.nl, computerarts.co.uk and deviantart for sponsors. Maybe CGNetworks.com can also help? I think you’ll be able to get some sponsors

#324

Im doing the hosting-stuff, and I can tell you: There soon will be a sponsored server with LOTS of traffic gb’s :scream:

I have a experience as concept designer, 3d texturing and a little as a 3d modeler in Maya. Now I´m workin as in a image department as web designer in a small company but I miss quite a lot drawings and fantastic work and your project promises lot of fun.
You can contact me at paeiro@hotmail.com

No problem to show you my portfolio as 3d modeler and 3d texturer

I show a sample of my draws.

hey there

just saw your project and i really want to join!
im a senior student in a Digital Arts major in college and i have some experience in modeling/animation/rendering in maya. also a big lotr fan of course…

I just recently saw this project you guys were working on and would be interested in helping. My weblink is www.raxip.com The people that are in charge of this project, if you could drop me a line at sonnreign@juno.com and let me know if you still need anyone, that’d be cool.

Ok I’ve got some great news! Wilco (wdekreij) did an excellent job in finding a sponsor.
We’ve now got a free host for one year, unlimited traffic (and we really needed that  ), 100mb webspace and a free .com domain.
So from now on the site and the demo can be found at the following adress:
http://www.minastirith-project.com/

I’m really glad that we’ve (Wilco I must say) solved this problem. Thanks once more man!

#331

The demo runs bad in my pc when all of the (actual) stuff are in screen, I´m pretty sure u need to down the polys in every object if u want to run the finished model in a computer that is not from Light and Magic.

How much is the actual polycount in the demo?.

#332

What are your specs? I’ve got a radeon9700 (not the best of the best surely) and it runs perfectly smooth here…
The polycount can be seen in the top of your screen. I though this version was about 1.100.000 tri’s. In the next version that amount will be doubled.

By the way, I’ll reply to all the ‘I want to join’ questions as soon as possible.

#333

Nice job! Do you think we will go over the 100meg limit? I have a Radeon9600XT and I get about 40fps when viewing everything. I used to have a Radeon7500 and I got about 7fps when viewing everything, and if I tried to go into wireframe, the viewer would crash.

#334

Since i have a mac, i use my brother´s pc to see the model:
WinXp 640Ram FX5600 Athlon 800 xD

It´s true is such an old pc, but a model with 50.000.000 tri´s can be a pain for mostly users.

#335

Hello You Guys. You’re doing a really great jobs. I’m working on a similiar project for my studies here in France (But i’m dutch from origins, I noticed a few up here are also  ). We are actually modelling Helm’s Deep with a few friends for our first years project. We are not yet pro’s like you do so my question is if you could send us just a few hints and tips on how to model in spline or polygon that would be really great. polygon modeling we know the basics but I think we underestimate the power of spline modeling and we are very eager to learn more about that. post them on this forum or send them to my mail adress jveebergen21968@hotmail.com. thanks already and keep up the great work

Today I’ll answer all the emails and topicposts again. I will also let a few more people join.
I’ll select by the amount of experience they’ve got. So if you want to join, please show me some work you did.

@The_Wicked_Caveman: This is how I work with splines, when I want to have a window with a round top in a wall:

  • I create an arc, 180degrees, perfectly round.
  • Convert to editable spline
  • Add the bottom part of the window shape. (create line)
  • Make sure all vertices are welded.
  • Create a rectangle, around the arc, with the size of the wall.
  • Attach the rectangle to the arc (still ed. spline)
  • Use an extrude modifier to give the wall surface and depth.

Instead of using the extrude modifier you can also use ‘convert to editable poly’. This will also give a surface to the wall, but not depth. Can also be usefull in some situations.

@Ariyoshi: Too bad that it doesn’t run very well on your pc. But I really don’t think that it’s a bad thing to create programs that can only be run on high-end pc’s now. Because within one year that technology will also be outdated, and then the software with it.
And I also don’t think that we’ll reach the 50.000.000 tri’s. Maybe 20.000.000, but not very much more I think (or hope :stuck_out_tongue: )

@Synthesizer: The 100meg will be enough for a while. And if we’ll get to the point where we need more, we’ll discuss it with the host.

@Admiral_Ra: You’ve got 5-rf-01. 3-rf-01 is already being done by someone else.

@Wowitch17: Here are some comments on your buildings. First one, 1-lf-15:
-It looks nice, but it seems like a topside only. There doesn’t seem to be a logical lower part on it.
-The pointy windows on the side look like a Gothic style. Minas Tirith is completely in a Roman/renaiscance style. So please, no pointy, only round windows. (this is for everyone working on this project)
-On the ref (for as far as visible), the building looks longer.
-There should be more detail on the building as a whole, some extra borders here and there, you know. Just take a look at other buildings and you’ll know what I mean.
The second one, 2-lb-01:
I don’t want to sound harsh, but this one just doesn’t look like it’s from MT. The style of the windows is good, but the rest looks a little off.
First the bottom part, when I look at the reference it isn’t that open.

The open style of your building makes it look almost fragile you know.
The top doesn’t seem to go that straight like on your building. It transforms from a rectangle to a round part, leading to the top.
I would really consider redoing this building. This isn’t because I think your building looks bad, but because I think that it doesn’t fit the MT style.

@Konstrukt: Yeah it will all have to be uvwmapped unfortunately… :stuck_out_tongue:

Ok, ok, by the way, here are some of my fan works, hope you like it:

#338

Is this OK?

It is NOT completed yet…

All smoothing groups are cleared.

#339

It’s a very nice start! I love those little ehh… things under the edge of the balcony. Maybe you could scale them just a little bigger, but they look very good.
I think that you can add some more detail around the windows (making an extra extrusion or something like that) And another minor thing, the amount of ehh… damn can’t get to a word again… well vertical things at the balcony could be a little more, that would make it look a bit more solid.

But again, nice WIP, please go on like this !
