Microsoft joins the Blender Development Fund — blender.org

Microsoft is joining the Blender Foundation’s Development Fund as a Corporate Gold member per July 1st, 2020.

We at Blender are very proud of this support statement, it’s another important signal that the industry migrates to open source and finds ways to contribute to it.

Chairman Blender Foundation

Nice that they are now willing to donate to blender foundation and support OSS. Maybe now would be a good time to petition them to release trueSpace as open source? What good is it doing anyone currently?

This will never happen. I once tried to contact Microsoft to ask for conditions to make trueSpace open source, and wrote to three different locations. But never got any response. There was also a petition from what i know.

My guess is that there was too much licensing from outside involved. And parts of it went into Microsoft technology. Strip all that away that they can’t open source and there is nothing left from trueSpace. Add to that that the technology is nowadays very outdated. To compete you would need to write a new viewport engine and a new renderer, add support for external renderers, start to update the tools …

But there is still life. The inofficial trueSpace build that is maintained by the community still gets a minor update from time to time

Ontopic. That Microsoft supports Blender is a great move. Such technology is nowadays a thing of enough manpower and money. The more the better.

EDIT> This is a tricky topic for a single post. No real answer, but some chatter. No sense in me dredging up the past. Sorry.
