mia_light_surface and glow

#1

Hi!

How do you go about rendering a visible lit light source?
I’m mainly interested in car headlights / tail lights, but in fact I have to admit I have very little success in creating any visible light.

At first I tried the glow property, but I didn’t very realistic result with that - after all, it’s not the glass cover of the headlight that’s supposed to be glowing and apparently it has no effect if used on the internal parts, since it’s applied after rendering(?).

Then I tried mia_light_surface, plugged in as additional color in a mia_material - but no cigar. Is there some rules of what settings to use with mia_material if it supposed to be glowing?

Here’s a(n embarrassing) example of my “glowing” light bulb test. It’s in a box and contains a point light for the actual light: http://i50.tinypic.com/syqi4n.jpg

Hello,
This should help you with your issue. I haven’t tried it yet myself since I haven’t had a need to do so, but this seems like it is right up your ally.

It is near the bottom of the document (Section 4-3 / pages 103 - 109)

Judging by some of your other posts, it seems like you are doing a lot of “testing.” I suggest taking a look Mental Images’ website, they have some other documents you might find interesting as well… i.e. SSS.

Thanks,

Actually the first one is the very example I was trying to apply to the light bulb scene, but I guess it’s not that simple. If the surface is bigger, then it works and with the addition of Lume Glare I was able to make this: http://i45.tinypic.com/n5sw8n.jpg
So I guess, same would work for the bulb, if the glass would be opaque…

There is another discussion about the Lume shaders here, which helped me out greatly:

For the car headlights however, it seems that the “regular” glow property does a pretty good job, now that I experimented a little more.

And yes, I do test a lot  I’m still a beginner in this, so almost everything is “first time” for me.
