looks damn great! amazing all the details! and allready shading on it!!! fast and fantastic!

#22

wow!! that is simply amazing.

having done a couple of fully detailed helicopters myself at work i know how much work it is and that´s why i look up to you for having the motivation for taking on something crazy like this as a personal project. And we all know how good it´s going to turn out in the end.

cheers

@MFlemming: Hey thanks for the kind words bud  Well yeah lets see, first all the stuff needs to be done, then we see how it looks like :stuck_out_tongue: The texture shooting docu is going to be up soon, then everyone who’s interested can have a look at it. Maybe you take your briulliant C-47 and start to bring in some more tone mapped texture elements, would love to see that! Alright, cu soon in Heidelberg, cheers mate

@Xenon: Hey thank you so much, still have to go through all the stuff you sent me! I’m still super busy but on the weekend tehre’s enough time for a longer reply to your email. Thanks again and ttu soon!

@TNeumann: Thanks too  Ha, no sure about the “fast” Hope this weekend I have time to start texturing the tail rotor!

@TwoOneOne: Thanks! Oh nice you did some helicopters as well? You have renders of them online? Would love to check them out! Was it movie related work? Cheers!

So the weekend is near and so the time for some more work on the little bird  Will post updates as soon as tehre’s something to look at!

Thanks for following this thread!

Cheers
Andre

Since it was for work i can´t really talk much about it, but here´s one of the pictures that got actually released. ( i was only involved in the modeling, btw everything was done in Nurbs) and as far as i know Eurocopter is using those models for configurators and other inhouse realtime visualisation, besides some other technical applications.

Anyways, i really enjoyed working on the helicopters, but would never be that crazy to start one as a personal project… well better never say never.

#25

Do you mind me ask, where do you find these detailed reference images in order to model those insane details down to the last screw? Whenever I try to model something, I can never find enough close up image of component, worse yet, usually can’t even find image of a consistent version of machinery. Also, I am curious as to how much RAM do you have… if you are going to put all these super detailed parts together.

#26

excellent so far

#27

Nice to see it here too Andre

Cobra 6

#28

where else can we see it?
i don´t want to miss a thing here.

#29

I noticed that too.
You can see it here : http://www.military-meshes.com/forums/showthread.php?t=4847

Just curious, Andre: Do you do orthographic layouts for all the interior cockpit instruments, or do you simply eye-ball them when modeling?

Also, my H-5 is just a mix of semi-finished parts right now, but maybe someday I’ll finish it. I really need to drive down to Oregon where they have one in the Evergreen Air museum to get better reference.

@TwoOneOne: Nice job on that Eurocopter, remember doing my EC-135 back in the days  But yeah, did mine via polymodeling, not nurbs. How long did you work on yours? Haha and yes, never say never

@Richard823: Sure, I just went to the real bird and took tonsof photos  Good thing is, all reference is of one particular model then, no confusion. My machine has 24GB of RAM but it’s not the model which slows down stuff, it’s the 8k x 8k 16bit PSD file in Photoshop which is annoying to work with. In 3ds max all is fine, 150fps on the wing plus displayed texture.

@kybel: Thanks :slight_smile:

@cobra6: Yeah :slight_smile: How’s you bird going?

@TwoOneOne & Nerick: Not much to miss, basically the same renderings :stuck_out_tongue:

@Artbot: Most of the cockpit stuff is modeling from photo reference. I constantly compare sizes and proportions between the parts. Wouldn;t be worth to model something CAD precise, it’s just for something being there behind the cockpit canopy. Eyes take some reference photos, it’s always way better than looking online for stuff.

So no update today, was working on the weekend… but soon…

Cheers
Andre

Holy macros!! 8k 16bit map… no wonder your renders look better than real O_O
My hat off to you sir… and funny enough, I built one a while back purely based on internet reference photos… all I can say is I can’t hold me model up close… sigh. Might enlighten us with the poly count just on the wing?

#33

On hold till I finish the TV commercial I am working on in two weeks time. After that I will resume the cockpit work

Cobra 6

#34

@Richard823: haha thx for the kind words  Any chance to have a look at your Mi-24? The polycount of the wing is at approx 380.000 polys.

@cobra6: Ah yeah I see, I also had almost no time to work on this one.

So finally I was able to sqeeze some time out of my schedule and worked a bit on the tail rotor. UVs were fun as they always are and here is the first version of the texture. Still some parts left to do, some more balancing required and so on…

Who doesn;t love this stuff? :stuck_out_tongue:

And here’s the first texture version. I used diffuse for bump and relfection for now. In case you wonder, yes it’s going to be a rusty bird

Hope you like it!

unfortunately, my Mi-24 belongs to the government… and they don’t let me put anything online. But I assure you… it’s a joke compare to yours… you are like the sun… too bright… oh god it burns… BURNS!!

Looking OK so far. I’ll be opening my own thread with this aircraft in a few weeks. Actually i’m working on the Super Hind but i’m making the original parts too since they are so similar, I might as well get two helicopters out of it. I started mine in 2008 but it quickly ground to a halt until this year, but by now i’m intimately familiar with every detail of the vehicle so I guess it wasn’t a complete waste of time - i’ve improved as a modeller over that time too so it all helps :). Anyway, good luck - the only advice I would give is don’t rush it - it is very easy to make errors due to assumptions that certain parts are symmetrical - they aren’t - not even the tiniest of things in some cases.

#37

@Richard823: Ah ok, was really curious  Well my Mi-24 is more insane, in not a good way I guess

@Telemachus: Thanks  Cool working on a Hind as well? Nice! Can’t wait to go through your thread then. Time for some helicopters here in the WIP section  Yeah I won’t rush anything here, want to get it right. There are a lot of a-symmetrical parts on it which ramps up the effort a lot. My version even has two different wings on it :stuck_out_tongue:

So I’m back from my trip to Germany and soon there will be more updates then

Cheers
Andre

#38

Moar!..

#39

What do you use as reference?

#40

@xLonewolfx: Working on it :slight_smile:

@martinezfg11: The real one, shown in the first post of this thread

Still trying to free up some more time for my little bird here…

Cheers
Andre
