MGAC 008 – Low-poly Boss

#1

We’ve all seen them; giant, evil, sometimes snarling and repulsive, heavily armed bad guys who try to kill you at the end of the level after their pathetic minions are done with you. Sometimes before their pathetic minions are done with you. Sometimes before they sick their minions on you.

Anyways.

It’s that wonderful time when there are two handheld gaming platforms duking it out for supremacy, and each tries to one-up the other by getting the best games with the most awesome graphics - and therefore the most badass creatures and bosses. Still, handhelds simply can’t compete with normal consoles when it comes to graphics. This is where you come in.

Gentle reader, you now have a task. You, if you so choose, shall reconstruct your favorite boss creature from any game you like… and you shall do it in 512 triangles or less. The entire restrictions are as follows:

No more than 512 triangles (to make it interesting)
No more than 2 (two) 128² texture sheets or 8 (eight) 64² texture sheets, no more than 256 colors each
You may also include 2 (two) 128² alpha textures or 8 (eight) 64² alpha textures
NO BUMP OR NORMAL MAPS

This boss character can be any boss you’ve ever gone up against in video game. You can do something creepy and organic, or you can do somthing like a boss from a top-down shooter. It doesn’t matter. The only restriction is that you’re recreating it.

OPTIONAL:

You may, if you don’t want to do a 3D one, make a sprite boss. The restriction here is that you may only recreate a boss that’s only been done in 3D. Again, only 2 (two) 128² texture sheets or 8 (eight) 64² texture sheets and 2 (two) 128² alpha textures or 8 (eight) 64² alpha textures. There is to be no anti-aliasing in the transparency - just black and white.

The challenge ends Monday, February 13th. That's two weeks from now (give or take a day. Whatever).

GO!

Well, I’m working on something.

:stuck_out_tongue:

Here is the trick. You and I will pass the winner’s title back a fourth until we each have 3 wins. Then we offer some sort of prize for winning and make the comp SUPER easy so there are a ton of entires. Once the MGAC becomes the most popular challenge on the planet, we can brag about being 3 time champs. Sound good to you? Who could stop us?

#4

One possible reason for the lack of entries is that CGChat did a similar mini-comp about 2 weeks ago, there were a bajillion entries over there, some of which reappeared here…not sure if anybody has enough fuel left to do yet another one

#5

I really dont - but I am going to anyway as phase II of my master plan! Plus I am going to make something I need to make anyway.

Oh, Swizzel, in the Tems and Conditions it says that the MGAC isnt supposed to go on longer than one week. You will be excceding your term. :stuck_out_tongue:

#6

Bleah. So we’ll end it on the 6th. I have a hard time with times and dates anyways, sue me.

As for there being a similar challenge on CGChat: So? Who says you can’t put up the same one here? I certainly wouldn’t mind seing King Koopa or your Tankbot, and maybe if you posted that it’d get people to participate. You know, give 'em a little kick in the rear to get them going. Besides, the Tankbot was what got me started on the idea.

I’m doing Metal Gear Rex, by the way. It’s going to have even fewer polygons than the one in the PS1 game. I’ve wanted to do it for a while, so this was a great chance to start it.

#7

512… so hard to work with hehe.
well i am going to try it out any ways and see where i go with it :buttrock:

#8

I should have something but it’s going to look really dumb without a rig, which I don’t know how to do. Maybe after the mini comp someone can help me set it up.

#9

This is interesting

I’m thinking of something

#10

can we get an extention to the 13th?

#11

Here is my reference image after he got his arms blown off:

I was hoping someone could help me rig the arm to point at a dummy object. Is this the best way? I’m to tired to think about it at the moment.

Good luck.

#12

That depends upon how many people finish today. I certainly haven’t finished mine, but only because Max’s default UV tools are absolute shite (at least on the older version I’m forced to work on). Whenever I try to unwrap the bloody thing it always gets a couple of vertices stuck in the lower left corner and they don’t budge unless I continually mess with the unwrapping options and stuff. I want pelt mapping, dammit! Stupid school.

Anyways, if there are no more models, textures, sprites, wireframes, concepts, or screengrabs posted by 5:00 pm UTC -8 hours, I’ll extend it to the 13th.

#13

Upon futher reflection, that didn’t make a bit of sense. Anyways, it’s half hour till the deadline. Nobody’s posted. This challenge is officially (or unofficially, I don’t care) extended.

The challenge ends at 5:00 pm UTC -8 hours on Monday the 13th.

Get crackin’!

#15

Well, looks like nobody else finished. I guess you win, se7enthcin. Good job.

#16

good deal but I wish other people entered

#17

Sorry fellas. I wish I could have gotten some better renders, figured out how to rig my guy, and completed the visable area. I’m moving pretty far in just a few days and am super busy getting ready.

Nice job se7enthcin. Are you going to pick the next challenge?

#18

Well, at least this thread was good for something; it got me working on a low-poly Metal Gear Rex. I’m now in the texturing stage. Maybe I’ll post a WIP thread for it tomorrow. The texturing is going pretty well and I can always make more progress.

#19

JuddWack - This is my first game art challenge. I didn’t know I would be choosing the next one. Sounds good though. Give me a few days to think of a good one. Or if you guys have a good idea for the next one. I’m down for pretty much anything.Swizzle - I’d like to see that WIP asap. That sounds rad.
