Mesh breaks when smoothing

#1

Hi,

I have been having trouble with this mesh as it breaks when I smooth it (pressing 3).
You can see the illustration of the problem in this link:

I already performed mesh clean-up. I tried exporting the mesh and smoothing it in Cinema4D and it works.
This gives me an impression that there is a setting in Maya I’m missing out.

Is there a way to solve this?

Thank you for your time.

Have you cleaned your history?

#3

Apologies for not mentioning.
Yes, I cleaned the history.

If you want, you can try the mesh in this link

export and import it like you did for C4D…

#5

i downloaded your file and it does smooth fine… in maya 2018.1…
i did nothing to the object just loaded the shell.mb file and hit smooth…

RE:“export and import it like you did for C4D”

I did that earlier and I still get the same result.

If it works for you, then I guess there is something wrong my Maya. I’ll just reinstall it and see if it fixed anything.

Hi,

I think I discovered the error. I’m in a computer that has only built in graphics. And I am getting OpenCL error (OpenCL Error: Out of device memory.
OpenCL Error: Out of resources.)

So I guess that must be it.
I guess what I plan to do is reduced the smoothing default in Maya.
I guess by default it is subdivides 3?
as presented in line command displaySmoothness -divisionsU 3 -divisionsV 3 -pointsWire 16 -pointsShaded 4 -polygonObject 3;

My question is there a way to set the default to only 1 or 2? That might solve my openCL issue for the meantime

you can set the smooth preview level per object in the shape node…
in the attribute editor --> smooth mesh --> subdivision levels

or hit die page up and down keys to jump up the levels after you turned preview on…
