Mesh breaking apart?

After I’ve worked on a mudbox mesh for a while (a couple hours, maybe) it often starts to break apart, like so:

I can sort of fix it with smoothing, but it’s a pain in the ass. At first I attributed it to GFX card overheating, something that’s given me trouble in other apps in the past, but I loaded this up right after turning on my PC and it happened right away.

thats only a viewport bug… your mesh is still in one piece…
are you working with mudbox 2010 sp1 and latest graphics driver…?

I have this other problem, now–this is the first time I’ve tried to extract a normal map, and while the hipoly and lowpoly meshes look okay to me, the result’s got some ugly seams all over it:
