MentalRay disabling ?

#1

Hello everyone!

A small question: can we disable MentalRay in 3DSMax 2011?
I explain: I only use Vray as renderer and I realized that 3DSMax consumes RAM and paging file as a fat pig!
Result: I have a very tough scene to render and I have to close and reopen Max several times as it freezes (not responding) for each manipulation.

I think it comes from plugins MentalRay because, by moving the files MentalRay_plugins.dlo and MentalRay.dlz, on the desktop, the performance of 3DSMax fly and I can finally work normally! The only concern is that with this method in the gross, I MaxScript errors in the file VBF_méthod.ms when I run my renderer

What annoys me is that I do have a config competition and I have to make hacks to run Max:
  NVidia Quadro 600
  Intel Core I7
  16 GB of ram
  2 1TB HD Raid mounted

So if someone knew how to disable MentalRay (I DON'T WANT MENTALRAY !) once and for all, that frankly would make me service and I would save valuable time!

Sorry for my English langage, but i'm french and Google Traduction is my best friend !!

  Thank you in advance

hey

you can´t uninstall mental ray. If you have not enough RAM, look at the Vray Rendersettings for example dynamic Memory Managment.

I asked the same thing on these forums some years ago, and someone told me hows to do it. I cant remember how, but it was possible

maybe if you do a search “disable mentalray” or something like that you’ll find the thread.

Thank you for your answer !!
But I solved the problem!
In fact, my scene was too heavy, and I just cut my scene into several pieces and I do a good bulk of After Effects compositing and voila!
It gives me more opportunity to add special effects, pretty cool!

Thank you all!

You can go to Customize->Preferences->mental ray tab
and un-check “Enable mental ray extensions”

I don’t think this will really do much though. If I am not mistaken, it essentially just hides the “mental ray Connection” roll-ups. (OK, it probably does more than that, but since a restart is not required, then Max is not unloading any DLLs and so won’t likely help out in any meaningful way)

I agree with Thorsten, try memory management on the Vray system menu.
