Mental Ray SSS + transparency?

Hi all,

very new to Mental Ray and was wondering if it’s possible to use transparency with SSS fast skin shader?

I don’t think there’s something for that in the shader itself, but it must be possible somehow to connect something in the shader to use transparency? …and how? …in Maya btw…

Not sure if there’s anything like it in maya, or if it even works, but in max I would try a “mix material” to mix a percentage between the SSS and the transparent material. there should be something similar in maya

One way you can do it is simply by plugging in the subsurface shader to an incandescence slot of a lambert for example and make the lambert transparent where you need transparency. Also remember to make the transparent areas black in the subsurface material so you are effectively adding 0 in those areas to achieve 100% transparency.
One thing to remember, if you do it this way, to also plug in the sss lightmap to the shading group of the lambert (or whatever shader you prefer, I like the mia) that has the transparency or the sss effect will be gone.
