Mental Ray- rendering issues, please help.

#1

I’ve been using Mental Ray to render a room environment and suddenly after resetting to a sunlight lighting scene in the render settings, it started giving me a solid blue render screen after just two seconds.
I checked the script editor for texture errors, as this is a known error. However, all it said was Mental Ray encountered a fatal error. I went back to my previous save file, reset all the settings and re-assigned all the Mental Ray textures and the lights. It then worked again, but when I brought it home it gave me the same blue render screen again. I work on two computers, one mac and one windows, and it worked fine on mac then it didn’t work on my windows computer. It did also happen when I saved on windows and reopened it again, but it is inconsistent as it doesn’t happen with every increment and save.

I’ve had to redo all the Mental Ray textures and lights thrice now, and if someone can help me with a permanent solution I’d be very grateful.

Could you post a bare bones version of the Maya scene? Also please provide more specifics about Maya version.

I’m pretty new to Maya and I don’t know what exactly a bare bones version of the scene means. I guessed that it meant just a simple view without anything fancy. As my render is not working, the best I can give is a screenshot. I hope that’s okay and what you meant.

I am using Maya 2015, student license on Windows and fully licensed 2014 on Mac. I’ve had the same problem after it seemed to have been slightly resolved, when I adjusted the rotation of the sun and sky slightly. This happened without saving or switching between computers.

Thank- you for your assistance.

Hi pln13,

By barebones I meant a maya scene that has just enough geometry and lights to still exhibit the problem. This way the maya file is small for posting and perhaps easier to trouble shoot.
If you need to include textures than post a zip file of the scenes and sourceimages folders.
Im assuming you are using a typical maya project folder setup.

Hi willanie,

For future reference, I now know what barebones means.
Thank- you for taking the time out to assist me, but I kept going back to it everyday to try and fix it; now it has magically resolved itself.
I haven’t changed any settings, but even previous scene folders that wouldn’t render now do. I’d like to know what causes this error, but I no longer have an error to post due its disappearance.
I did clean out my hdd by an extra 50gigs, making 250gigs remaining but I doubt it’s that. Hopefully it stays away for good now.

Again, many thanks for your assistance.
