mechanical rigging problem

#1

Hello everyone, I’m a student currently taking some 3D modeling courses here at my university, and am coming across an issue with my models rigging setup.

I modeled a Mech (MadCat to be more precise) and am having issues getting the legs rigged as they should be. The reverse knee pivots on a central point, and I’m not sure if I need to either double-joint the knee (causes the knee to bend in a funky way), or put a single joint in and then spline it so it’ll stay horizontal. Any pointers?

I don’t entirely understand what you’re asking, could you post a picture of the leg?

of course, I can’t believe i forgot to do so!

Side view is typically the most helpful when showing legs.

A leg is typically only going to pivot back and forth like a door hinge.

The madcat is a typical leg setup, with the knee pointing in the opposite direction. The Swivel that you would see happens higher up at the hip and is done with the pole vector. There should not be anything overly compicated in setting this up.

Right, you can get away with a pretty straightforward ik setup here, the one thing that you’ll need to do with mechanical stuff is pay attention to the joint orientation. Since the knee is a hinge joint, make sure the joint there is aligned so that the knee can be bent properly using only one axis of the joint. Then you can lock the other two axis when you make your IK, and it should work correctly.
