Maya: Use Noise or Fractal to "grow" a pattern

Hi all, I have been working on a project that requires me to show a surface that accumulates dirt and grime over a period of time, similar to a time-lapse sequence. My thought was to use something like a Noise or Fractal texture in the surface shader that has two colors, white and black. I thought I could keyframe one of the two colors to transition from white to black, thus making the noise or fractal pattern appear to start as small specks and then “grow” into its full arrangement. However, the result just looked like the whole pattern fades in rather than growing bit by bit. I’ve tried messing around with various other parameters in the node, but haven’t gotten the result I’m looking for, so for now I’m stumped. Does anyone have any suggestions to try and achieve this effect?
