Maya -> shockwave ~export failures~ (mirrored geometry)

having a HUGE headache trying to export Maya created game levels into shockwave

process)

create 1/2 of an arena
group the objects
duplicate
scale X to -1

*[i]scale -x instantly causes problem in maya alone. (why?)

[/i]fix process)
take each mirrored object and combine with a new polycube
select>faces and delete the combined cube faces

from there the objects are fixed with flipped normal issues (however 1/2 the time Maya just yoinks out of existance anyway )

now combine the entire level and try to export
shockwave export fails.

does anyone have any information on a better process, reason why, any workarounds and fixs for these issues?
