[Maya] My First Real Model: Why do I get these weird rendering artifacts?

#1

Hello Everyone,

As the title line suggests, I am pretty new to modeling. I’ve done a lot of small experiments, but I’m working on my first real project. I was wondering if the CG society might be able to help me out. This is my first time posting on an artist forum (I’m primarily a game developer), so please forgive me if I’ve posted this question in the wrong forum.

So, I have modeled a chest in Maya LT, and I’ve ensured that the front of the chest is a flat plane, but I keep getting some weird visual issues on the front

I’ve tried deleting and recreating the faces, tweaking the verts, and ensuring that the plane that the artefact appears on is indeed a flat plane.

I was’t sure what to do, so I went ahead an imported the mesh into Unreal Engine to see if I got a similar result with the Unreal Renderer… I did.

Being a complete noob, I don’t really know what might be causing this weird bending since the verts are all in the same plane.

I’d really appreciate some suggestions or advice on what may be the problem. Other critique is definitely welcome, but not really the focus of this post.

Thanks Everyone.

Could be the normals. Try to set the normal angle of your object. Another problem could be if you have applied bevel in your model. The bevel sometimes screw up the normals of your model.
