Maya/Mental Ray - Peach Fuzz

#1

I am looking for recomendations/methods for creating peach fuzz on objects.

Examples:
face, a wool hat, cotton, tennis ball

I have tried to emulate this by using Maya’s nHair system, but I find it difficult to work with. I didn’t know if there was quick way to replicate this. Or at least a nice preset to work with.

Thanks!

Any recommendations/tutorials?

I cant find anything other than creating a Maya hair system to mimic the fuzz, but its hard to control.

This really depends on how close up you need to get. Often, you can mimic peach fuzz at the shader level, using specularity tricks, and thus no need for individual hairs.

Thanks for the reply. This kind of ties into my other question about creating realistic cloth.
I am very interested in mimicking this with specular tricks.

This is what I am trying to create, a slightly fuzzy blazer. Here is a good example of what I’m trying to achieve.

Thanks again for the help!

Mia material is perfect for this. The specular/reflections can be easily controlled to be stronger on the edges via the brdf settings. Use a value lower than 5 (maybe 2 or 3) for the brdf curve to broaden the falloff from strong glancing specular to low level specular for front facing surfaces.

You’ll also want to do this for the diffuse component. Turning the roughness slider up gives a nice powdery velvety result, but if you want full control over it then plug a black to white ramp (black on top, white on bottom) into the diffuse weight and plug a sampler info node into that ramp to drive the facing ratio values of the diffuse by connecting the V coord value of the ramp to the facing ratio of the sampler info node. Your ramp will need to be a V ramp. If it’s a U ramp then connect the U coord value instead of V.

This old post says it a bit better than I can right now.

Thanks!

I may try to post a before and after render tonight if I make progress. That may help to diagnose certain issues.

Hey lestaylor,
It seems that you are working in maya,
would you want to teach me how to use the
UV Texture Editor ?
Sometimes it doesnt match with the Models at the viewport.
Thank you very much.

Enclosed is the preview
