Maya/Mental Ray - Cloth Node

#1

I am trying to create the realistic cloth texture of a men’s coat.

The material I am using is a Mia Material X with a texture hooked up to the color slot I made in photoshop.

I have tried to plug in a cloth node to the mia material x’s standard/and or overall bump, but do not seem to get nice/realistic results with either. The cloth pattern seems to create a semi-moire pattern and look unnatural. I have also changed the repeat values of the bump 2d node it creates, but still no luck.

The object has nice/even uv’s, so I don’t think that’s the issue.

Any help or advice would be heavily appreciated. Thanks!

Does anyone have any advice?

Thanks!

I wouldn’t use the cloth texture in Maya for any realistic texturing. I would use photographs for your cloth, and tweak them in Photoshop to suit your needs first! Perhaps make a tiling texture there, and then change the size to accommodate your object in Maya?

What kind of cloth are you going for? Can you post us a scene screenshot, and maybe some examples of the type of cloth you’re trying to achieve?

Please see the attachment for an example. Thanks!

I am using a mia material x as my shader.

First, you’ll have a lot greater response if you post in the Maya, Rendering forums instead!

But I’d start with a satin-style reflection in your mia_material_x. Here’s a good tutorial, though obviously you’ll need to tweak it to achieve the light, fuzzy look of your suit.

Once you’ve dialed that specularity down, you could run a light bump map for the thread of the cloth, and perhaps get pretty close?
